Tim Riungu is a saxophonist based in Nairobi, Kenya. He has been active on the live music scene in East Africa since 2007 with various musical ensembles that include The Villagers Band, Voices United in Christ (VUC) and AfroSync Band. Tim has also performed in musical tours internationally with the “Daughters of Africa” and “Out Of Africa” theatre shows in Europe and was a member of the Natal University Jazz Ensemble for two years.
Tim currently leads The Sax Appeal, a jazz trio with Sedar Oddenyo on guitars and Tony Kimangu on percussions. We play acoustic instrumental jams of well-known classics in the African, Jazz, Soul and Reggae genres. The band has been together since 2018 and are resident at Geco Cafe in Lavington, Nairobi. We regularly play private functions, garden parties, wedding receptions and have been featured on NTV Kenya.
Another group led by Tim is The Retro, a 7-piece band that does danceable throwback selections of Soul /Pop/Reggae/Afro music from the 1970s-1990s. Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the attendant restrictions on public gatherings, The Retro had a well-attended residency at The Vineyard club on Kiambu Road.
